Africans abroad handed tough draws in Women’s Champions League

Africans Abroad \ Uefa Women's Champions League

Gaelle Enganamouit’s Avaldsnes will take on holders Lyon, eyeing a fourth successive title, in the round of 32 of the 2018/19 Uefa Women’s Champions League (UWCL).

This will be a rematch of the 2016/17 round of 32 where Lyon collected a 5-2 away win and a 5-0 home victory to send the Norwegian side packing.

The BIIK-Kazygurt trio of Fazila Ikwaput, Chinwendu Ihezuo and Charity Adule have also been handed a tough tie against Barcelona.

BIIK reached the round of 16 last season but that might prove a tough ask this time round as they meet a familiar foe.

The perpetual Kazakhstan champions faced Barcelona in this round in 2015/16, drawing 1-1 at home before losing 4-1 away.

Meanwhile, Priscilla Okyere’s Spartak Subotica have landed German giants Bayern München.

The tale is similar for Leandra Smeda’s Gintra who have been paired with Czech side Slavia Praha.

Gintra reached the round of 16 last season while Slavia Praha have reached the quarter-finals in two of the last three seasons.

The African quartet at Champions League debutants Somatio Barcelona have been handed a more favourable draw and will face Glasgow.

Rita Akaffou, who captained the reigning Cyprus champions in their perfect run in the qualifying round, will suit up alongside Fatou Coulibaly, Rebecca Elloh and Ngozi Ebere.

The first leg of the round is set for 12/13 September while the return leg will be held on 26/27 September
