Cecafa 2018: Uganda silence rivals Kenya, Rwanda shock holders in opening day action

Cecafa Women's Championship 2018
Crested Cranes break losing streak

Cecafa Women’s Championship 2018 commenced in dramatic fashion as the underdogs stunned the favourites at the Stade de Kigali, Rwanda on Thursday 19 July.

Uganda set the tone for the day with a 1-0 win over arch rivals Kenya in the championship opener.

Lilian Mutuuzo netted the lone goal in the opening minutes to fire the Farida Bulega-led side to victory.

This was the fourth meeting between the two sides in just two years, with Uganda failing to score in the first three attempts.

The win was therefore sweet revenge for Bulega’s charges, who fell 4-0 to Kenya in a similar fixture in the last edition of the championship (2016).

It also avenged for the most recent defeat, a painful 1-0 loss on aggregate in AWCON 2018 qualifiers three months ago.

Hosts down holders

The late kick-off of the day produced yet another upset as Alice Kalimba’s 34th-minute goal secured the win for hosts Rwanda over holders Tanzania.

This was the second meeting between the two sides in recent times and like the first, a five-goal thriller in Cecafa 2016 group stage, Rwanda proved far from a pushover.

Tanzania enjoyed much of the possession but Rwanda managed to keep them at bay till final whistle to the jubilation of the home crowd.

With that, the reigning Cecafa gold and silver medalists, commence their campaign in defeat, and as fate would have it, the two face-off next.

Tanzania and Kenya will lock horns in the late kick-off on Saturday, 21 July, in a repeat of the Cecafa 2016 final.

In the early kick-off on Saturday, Rwanda will take on Ethiopia in another rematch of Cecafa 2016 group stage with the hosts looking to avenge the 3-2 defeat in 2016.
