Cyprus Cup: Banyana Banyana down Hungary to set up stirring last round

Banyana Banyana 1-0 Hungary

South Africa picked a comfortable 1–0 win over Hungary at the Tasos Markos Stadium, Paralimni on Friday to set up a thrilling final round in Group C.

Coach Desiree Ellis, retaining the back four that started against Slovakia, made five changes with Roxanne Barker starting ahead of Andile Dlamini in goal.

Linda Motlhalo and Leandra Smeda made way for Rachel Sabati and Kgaelebane Mohlakoana in midfield.

Up front Melinda Kgadiete and Sduduzo Dlamini came in for Jermaine Seoposenwe and Chantelle Esau.

Like in the opening clash, the South Africans controlled proceedings against Hungary as well.

Both Mohlakoana and Lebohang Ramalepe tested the Hungarian defence early on but were denied by keeper Biro Barbara.

But there was no denying Thembi Kgatlana in the 21st minute as she outpaced her marker before slotting home the opener.

South Africa held on for a 1–0 victory to move to second in the group on four points, two behind leaders Korea DPR.

The North Koreans edged Slovakia 1–0 to extend their perfect start ahead of their final group match against South Africa on Monday 5 March.

Meanwhile, Italy continued their thrashing spree, whacking Wales 3–0 to join Korea DPR as the only nations with a perfect run so far.

Cristiana Girelli, who netted a brace against holders Switzerland in the opening tie, did it again, scoring twice in the first half against Wales.

Elsewhere, the holders recovered to hammer Finland 4–0, so did Austria who trounced Czech Republic 2–0 to move to a point off Spain who drew 0–0 with Belgium.
