Morocco Women’s National Team trounced COTIF finalists Valencia 1–0 on Thursday 10 August to wrap up their COTIF outing on a high.
Valencia dominated the match but the Moroccans held firm at the back and were swift in counter attack with Jraidi Ibtissam and Hajri Meryem connecting superbly up front.
After a scoreless first half, the North Africans finally broke the deadlock courtesy of Meryem’s 55th minute strike.
The goal turned out to be the match winner to break Valencia’s unbeaten run and seal Morocco’s third-place finish.
This sees Morocco register the best finish by an African side after both Namibia WNT and Kenya WNT finished fourth in the 2015 and 2016 editions respectively.
In the other final group match played on Thursday, former COTIF champion Levante, club to Ivorian midfielder Ida Guehai, grabbed a 1–0 win over French side ASPTT Albi.
Cameroonian defender Yvonne Leuko, who has just joined ASPTT Albi, played the whole match for the French outfit who bow out without registering a win thus finish sixth in the log.
Valencia and Atletico, who finished in the top two of the standings after the group stage, will face each other in the final set for Friday 11 August.
